About the Instrument Bank

The Steans Institute Instrument Bank is a vital resource that provides world-class instruments to exceptional musicians participating in the Piano and Strings Program. With a collection of nine extraordinary instruments, the Instrument Bank ensures that artists have access to the tools needed to unlock their full musical potential.

Steans alumni have the opportunity to apply for a loan of one of the following instruments (as available): 

  • Gagliano Violin 1778
  • Testore Violin ca. 1730
  • Tononi Violin ca. 1690
  • Cox Viola 2002
  • Massaguer Viola 1767
  • Betts Cello 1780
  • Dodd Cello ca. 1820
  • Vuillaume Cello ca. 1860

Who Should Apply and Eligibility

Alumni of the Piano & Strings Program are eligible to apply for a loan if they meet the following criteria:

  • Must have participated in the Piano & Strings Program in the past five (5) years
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens, legal residents, and/or hold a valid visa (that permits travel to and from the United States) for the duration of the loan period. 
  • Submit a complete application.
  • Strong consideration will be given to applicants who show a demonstrated commitment to a performance career and participation in music education, arts advocacy, and/or community engagement through music.
  • Loans are granted for a two-year period, with a possible extension for a third year.
  • Loan recipients must agree to participate in at least two education or community engagement events a year. 
  • Loan recipient must serve on the review panel for at least one term after their loan agreement expires.

The deadline for applications is Friday, May 29, 2026.

  • Written responses describing your career goals, your educational/leadership activities in the music world, and how you anticipate an instrument loan would help advance those objectives
  • An up-to-date résumé or CV (as a PDF or other attachable digital document)

Review Process

Our selection process is designed to identify alumni with exceptional promise and a need for a high-level instrument.

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Career Plan and Goals: A clearly defined career plan with attainable goals 
  • Need for Loan: Demonstrated need for an instrument to support
  • Citizen Artist: Applicant demonstrates a commitment of interest to music education/community engagement/arts advocacy
