“The Science of Scoring” Add-On Event Ticket: $10
Tickets for this special add-on event do not include admission for tonight’s concert, which must be purchased additionally.
As Oscar-nominated composer Laura Karpman explains it, “the absolute magic of music in film is contingent on a strange bargain between an audience and a composer—it’s pure witchcraft.”
Over the 2026 Breaking Barriers Festival, Karpman and Ravinia Chief Conductor Marin Alsop are exploring music’s ability to set the mood of stories and action in movies and TV, and they are highlighting and celebrating women who are leading the way as composers for the screen.
In this event, Karpman and Alsop lead an interactive performance with a studio-size ensemble, workshopping sounds that demonstrate “The Science of Scoring” to create heroic, sad, suspenseful, and more moods.

One of the most self-innovative artists in modern music, St. Vincent is a master of kaleidoscopic sonic and visual reinvention, reshaping her audio and visual personae repeatedly over the past 20 years. Praised by M-A Chronicle as “uniquely authentic and exhilarating,” she continues to push the boundaries of genre and performance, crafting bold new worlds that challenge, captivate, and redefine the possibilities of pop music.
In a limited, first-ever run of performances with orchestra, St. Vincent joins the CSO alongside Grammy-winning orchestrator and conductor Jules Buckley, opening a bold new artistic chapter.
