About the Performance
A morning of musical adventure for the whole family! Discover the mesmerizing beauty of Chopin’s music with Magic Piano and The Chopin Shorts, accompanied live by acclaimed classical pianist Victor Santiago Asunción.
Produced by Oscar award-winning BreakThru Films, known for Loving Vincent and The Peasants, Magic Piano and The Chopin Shorts promise to delight audiences of all ages with an enchanting musical journey through the Polish composer’s famous works.
Magic Piano tells the story of 10-year old Anna, whose Dad has left Poland to work abroad, leaving Anna with her aunt and cousin Chip-Chip. In her loneliness, Anna decides to run away, but an ever-eager Chip-Chip decides to follow. Together, they stumble onto an old piano, which transforms into a magical flying machine, whisking Anna and Chip-Chip off to adventure! The Chopin Shorts are a whimsical collection of short films set to Chopin’s études, introducing Chopin to the youngest generation and charming audiences of all ages.
Both films are accompanied by talented pianist Victor Santiago Asunción. Hailed by the Washington Post for his “poised and imaginative playing,” the Filipino-American pianist has appeared in concert halls across Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Turkey, and the US as a recitalist and concerto soloist.
His recordings include the complete cello sonatas by Beethoven with Tobias Werner, cello sonatas by Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff with Joseph Johnson, and, with cellist Evan Drachman, sonatas by Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Grieg. He is featured in the award-winning recording Songs My Father Taught Me with Lynn Harrell, produced by Louise Frank and WFMT-Chicago. Asunción is the founder and Artistic and Board Director of FilAm Music Foundation, a non-profit foundation that is dedicated to promoting Filipino classical musicians through scholarship, and performance.
