Program Notes

Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op. 67 Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 (“Emperor”) Beethoven’s “symphonic ideal” has been idealized all over again by guest conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi and piano soloist Emanuel Ax, who bring a critically acclaimed European and American tour of the master’s music for two different all-Beethoven evenings, including the must-hear “Eroica” symphony and “Emperor” concerto. These same two artists won superlatives here in 2011, when they presented two extremely popular evenings of music by Brahms, prompting the Chicago Tribune to wish, “One must hope, on the evidence of the two Brahms programs, that the summer management invites Dohnány back at the earliest opportunity,” and to praise Ax for “the rich poetic instincts he applied to his collaboration with Dohnány and the orchestra.”
