About The Artist

We most often recognize the greatest contributions to lieder—the grand Romantic art song tradition—as coming from Schubert, Schumann and Mahler, setting verses by the German poets of their era. But during the 20th century, even as Germany was embroiled in World War II, Eisler fled to Hollywood, where he chronicled his horror at developments in his homeland in what came to be known as The Hollywood Songbook. Of Matthias Goerne’s recording of the collection, Gramophone said, “he has done nothing better.”
