Growing up in Chicago’s jazz cradle, Thelonious Monk Competition winner Marquis Hill honed his chops in both the Ravinia Jazz Scholars program and Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute on his way to being dubbed “a dauntingly skilled trumpeter” by the New York Times. He recently made his debut on the Concord label with The Way We Play, paying tribute to those roots with his lyrical reworkings of standards like Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” and Monk’s “Straight No Chaser” and deeper cuts like Carmell Jones’s “Beep Durple” and Donald Byrd’s “Fly Little Bird Fly.” Now dividing his time between New York and Chicago, Hill and his ensemble return to his other home, Ravinia, with music that “crystallizes the hard-hitting, hard-swinging spirit of Chicago jazz” (Chicago Tribune).
