At the age of 10, Amit Peled had his life changed by an audio cassette recording. The music so moved him, he learned the instrument featured on it, partly in hopes of impressing a girl. Little did he know that 30 years on he’d not only still be impressing people with that instrument, the cello, but he’d be doing so on the exact instrument he originally fell in love with: the 1733 Matteo Goffriller cello owned and played for 60 years by Pablo Casals. Peled calls Casals “the grandfather of classical music of the 20th century. … He really shaped what we know today of how to make a phrase, and was a bridge from the old times, [to] Romantic music, to our day.” Having recently re-created some of Casals’s earliest concerts with the cello from a century ago, Peled returns to Ravinia with three of Bach’s solo cello suites, works the master rescued from obscurity and rightfully set alongside the composer’s solo violin sonatas and partitas as landmark showpieces.
