Program to include the Midwest premiere of 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for Eight Voices by Caroline Shaw, plus works by Rinde Eckert, Caleb Burhans, Judd Greenstein, Brad Wells and Merrill Garbus.
The cutting-edge vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth makes its Ravinia debut on a program that includes the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning work Partita for Eight Voices, penned by one of its own members. In residence at MassMOCA since 2009, the ensemble has explored several nontraditional vocal techniques, including Tuvan throat singing, many of which informed composer Caroline Shaw’s 21st-century take on a Baroque dance suite. The Pulitzer Prize board hailed the work’s “polished and inventive” vocal effects that range from speech and whispers to sighs and wordless melodies. This sonic palette was also evident on Roomful of Teeth’s debut album last year, a showcase of the adventurous ensemble’s world- and history-spanning influences that Pitchfork says “will send an unnamable thrill down your spine.” The group has been lauded on WQXR’s Q2 for a “peerless combination of virtuosity and versatility” and has twice been a Critic’s Pick by TimeOut New York.
