A graduate of The Juilliard School with dual bachelor and master of music degrees in piano and composition, Michael Brown was a fellow of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute in 2008 and 2009, and toured with Miriam Fried and fellow RSMI alumni during 2010–11. He took first prize at the 2010 Concert Artists Guild Competition, affording him the opportunity to play at Carnegie, Avery Fisher and Alice Tully halls, where The New York Times praised his “vividly characterized” and “free-spirited” performances. Brown was commissioned as composer-in-residence for the 2008 Pianofest in the Hamptons, and has had his works performed at Tanglewood, Le Poisson Rouge, the Curtis Institute and most recently at the Kennedy Center—for the premiere of Constellations and Toccata, a work included in Orion Weiss’s September 3 performance at Ravinia—as well as Carnegie and Alice Tully halls by the composer himself. The Queen Fine Arts Examiner hailed his “lithe, athletic keyboard work” in the duality of pianist and composer.
