About The Artist

Ravinia's Backstage Blog

“Tim Fain plays like a virtuoso and thinks like a cinematographer,” proclaimed Vanity Fair in anticipation of the violinist’s “Portals” multimedia concert in 2011, which featured his longtime friend and Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell accompanying him on piano—via a video recording shown at life size on a video screen. (A piece of music central to that program, Philip Glass’s Partita for Solo Violin, brought Fain, a two-year participant in RSMI, back to Ravinia the following year for a duo recital with Glass, whose own multimedia concert setting the poetry of Leonard Cohen’s Book of Longing Fain toured with to Ravinia in 2007.) The filmic disposition served Fain in stride as he reciprocated work with Britell on the soundtracks for 12 Years a Slave, Free State of Jones, and Moonlight. That collaboration brings the duo to Ravinia to premiere “Once Upon a Score,” a multimedia event featuring a suite from the recent Best Picture Oscar winner alongside other film music they helped create, including Fain’s remix of music he performed for Black Swan and his original score for the Google VR film Resonance.
