About The Artist

For the past 50 years Marlboro Music, like RSMI, has sent its alumni on national tours, earning acclaim for “performances that radiate vitality and freshness” (Washington Post). The Musicians from Marlboro return to Ravinia to breathe life into three composers’ final works for different chamber-music forms. They will unearth the romantic, almost melancholic side of Haydn in his Piano Trio in E-flat Minor and delve into the somber, introspective themes that also pervade Britten’s Third String Quartet, which references the composer’s own presciently titled opera Death in Venice—he passed away in that city before this, his penultimate work, was given its premiere. The Marlboro musicians will also exhibit their “irresistible … energy and collective virtuosity” (Boston Globe) in the typical French lyricism and distinct modal harmonies of Fauré’s Second Piano Quartet.
