Though the Impressionist painters were content with still water, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel also found inspiration in driving storms and in the vivacious life that surrounds and inhabits water. Such gentleness and force could be harnessed by a full orchestra, but each composer divined how the natural world might be evoked by a single piano. Alexandra Silocea captured these sonorities on her recent Sound Waves album, which Gramophone magazine called “a satisfying fusion of power, suppleness and breadth,” recounted here and foreshadowed by Beethoven’s thunderous “Waldstein” Sonata.
