John Adams: The Gospel According to the Other Mary (Midwest premiere)

Program Notes

Telling an immortal story, John Adams and Peter Sellars speak not for Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, nor for Mother Mary, but instead for the “Other Mary,” Mary Magdalene. In the words of the composer, he and librettist created a Passion for the “eternal present,” weaving the Biblical narrative with modern text and poetry from Dorothy Day, Louise Erdrich, Primo Levi, Rosario Castellanos, June Jordan, Hildegard von Bingen, and Rubén Dario. The work sort of a companion piece to the duo’s El Niño from a dozen years ago, a woman’s perspective on the timeless tale. But while similarly revelatory, the LA Times observes, “Adams is consumed in his score by suffering, but it is not so much the suffering of Jesus as the suffering that Jesus causes for those who love him, most of all Mary. His gift to them is to give them their own identity.”
