The stars of the future from Ravinia’s summer conservatory, the Steans Music Institute, perform an evening of chamber music highlighted by Mendelssohn’s crowning work in the chamber-music genre, an octet hailed as “perfect” that transcends small-ensemble limits with its richly intricate part-writing. The composer himself specified that the work be played “in symphonic orchestral style,” and the rich sonorities he has created will fill the acoustically splendid Bennett Gordon Hall as the Steans Music Institute inaugurates its new series of Monday-night concerts.
