About the Artist

On the eve of a national tour, five Steans Program alumni return to Ravinia with music of intense contrasts. The folk-like patter and coiled-spring harmonies of Bartók are a prelude to Mendelssohn’s last quartet and the quaking agony of sudden loss that filled what became one of his final works. Alongside violinist Miriam Fried, entering her 30th year as director of the Program for Piano & Strings, they also perform music from Mozart and Jessie Montgomery, the resident composer at Steans this summer who holds that same role with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through 2024.

Performers

Miriam Fried, violin and program director
Geneva Lewis, violin
Maria Ioudenitch, violin
Zhanbo Zheng, viola
Gabriel Martins, cello
Sahun Sam Hong, piano
