Not yet old enough to vote, Matthew Whitaker has nonetheless been elected one of the most electrifying jazz artists to enter the scene this decade. Even before his standout appearance on Showtime at the Apollo last winter, Whitaker had earned endorsements from Yamaha and Hammond, and his performance on the classic show revival earned him comparisons to Stevie Wonder—not only a phenomenal talent, the pianist and organist has also been blind from birth. Since the calendar turned over, he’s played the Kennedy Center for both the NEA Jazz Masters tribute concert and the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program—a return to the venue he first played, along with Carnegie Hall, in 2016—and before his date with a trio at Ravinia, he’ll have had a stage to himself for the entire Monterey Jazz Festival.
