Concert Information

Himself a piano prodigy, Teo Gheorghiu starred in the title role of the award-winning Swiss film Vitus, which culminates in the prodigious 12-year-old pianist performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto at Zurich’s Tonhalle—the filmed performance marked Gheorghiu’s public concert debut. Subsequently a top-prize winner of the Liszt Competition and Bonn’s Beethovenfest, he made his recording debut on Deutsche Grammophon before the age of 20, again playing Schumann’s concerto. Gheorghiu will create further wonder with Schumann in his Ravinia debut with the composer’s Scenes from Childhood, a characterful tribute to the unique senses of joy and mystery that accompany youth. From troikas of winding and tender Chopin mazurkas and lullaby-like Brahms intermezzos to Ravel’s imaginative Valses nobles et sentimentales and a set of stormy Beethoven variations, Gheorghiu will also be showcasing what the Geneva Tribune called “[a] touch of blinding clarity [and] astounding … differentiation of acoustic perspectives.”
