Steven Schwartz

President and CEO

Midtown Athletic Clubs

According to my sister, everyone needs a library card and a membership to a health club. Sound mind, sound body. To that I’d add, everyone needs a little Ravinia in the summer. Growing up within blocks of Ravinia, I loved the music I heard on summer afternoons as musicians rehearsed for each night’s performance. The music helped shape the community and brought friends together on summer nights. At Midtown, we are committed to creating clubs that bring family and friends together to work out, swim, play tennis and other sports, dine, shop, relax, and socialize. Located in Bannockburn, Chicago, Palatine, and Willowbrook, they are sports resorts right here at home. As a sponsor, Midtown takes pride in supporting the Ravinia Festival community as an extension of our belief that active, social people lead happier, healthier lives.

In Memory of Tom Pick

Ravinia, to Tom and me, meant wonderful summer memories that go back over 60 years. They began with romantic picnics on the lawn when we were dating, and include early married years when I was the youngest one on the Women’s Board, seeing our four kids work as wait staff and ushers, and giving a memorial concert dedicated to Tom’s mother. Another high spot was our annual get-together dinner for our Sanibel/Chicago friends before our sponsored concert. Tom’s eight-year Alzheimer’s didn’t end his enjoyment of the music, and he was able to attend until the pandemic. Hopefully, the echoes of tonight’s music will reach him wherever he is! With love, Sue.

Our two major fundraisers, The Festival Shop and the annual summer Gala, continue to raise funds each year that help support our mission.

The Sandra K. Crown Endowment for American Classic Music Theater in Honor of Sandra K. Crown

Sandy has always believed that "the arts are the implicit language of peace in the world, with Ravinia the shining star." When she was chairman of the Ravinia Women's Board, the board began to fundraise. Her children worked with the board and with her when the board started the Friendship Booth, which evolved into Ravinia’s Festival Shop. Her children chose to honor her with a very generous gift to the endowment fund, in perpetuity. This gift helps support the Ravinia Festival and will be celebrated on July 27th with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing Broadway Today. Ravinia was the first to highlight American Classic Music Theater, followed by the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Goodman Theatre.

In Honor of Paul B. and Virginia L. Uhlenhop

Paul and Ginny Uhlenhop began coming to Ravinia in the mid-1960s when Ginny was a music teacher at Indian Trail Elementary School. In the 1970s–80s, Ravinia became one of their favorite places to gather with friends and enjoy good music. Paul joined the Ravinia Board of Trustees in 1991 and served in that capacity for roughly 15 years. Attending Ravinia remained a central part of their summers until 2019. This year, Paul and Ginny’s family is honored to continue their support of the Ravinia performance tradition.
