Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) is a chamber ensemble comprising some of the promising young musicians from the festival’s summer conservatory. Led by Piano and Strings Program Director Miriam Fried, the ensemble presents not only concerts but also educational outreach programs to bring the richness of Ravinia to a wider audience. While the repertoire varies each year, it always includes three to four pieces for piano and strings from classical and contemporary composers—this year including a vocal selection with string quartet accompaniment. Composer Bernard Rands, whose work was featured in last year’s tour, had nothing but praise for the young musicians, “extraordinary both in technical accomplishment and sensitive, musical intelligence.” Musicians from the Steans Music Institute has been this beacon of excellence at such prestigious venues as the Library of Congress, New York’s Town Hall, Miami’s Friends of Chamber Music series and Boston’s Gardner Museum, where it returns this year.
