New York Times article on Rachel Barton Pine
Paganini’s complete 24 violin caprices in one evening.
Never before performed at Ravinia in their entirety, Paganini’s 24 Caprices are each virtuosic études designed to hone and showcase individual skills on the violin. But behind the physical challenges is beautiful music that should never be overshadowed. Drawing from the bel canto(“beautiful singing”) vocal tradition in Italy where the human voice was the most revered of instruments and great singers were worshiped, Paganini revolutionized violin playing and elevated the violinist to levels of superstardom previously only achieved by singers. Each Caprice focuses on certain special skills and characters, requiring its own, very distinct interpretation. When performed consecutively, they offer an amazing exploration of the violin’s personality, tone colors and expressive range.
International concert violinist and Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine returns to Ravinia over two consecutive nights to perform the complete caprices each evening in Bennett Gordon Hall, the venue she sold out in 2012.
