Program

Hailed by the Washington Post as “The very real thing—an absolute powerhouse of a pianist,” Denis Matsuev more than lived up to that lofty evaluation with a triumphant all-Rachmaninoff recital that earned an explosive ovation last summer in the Martin Theatre. This summer he celebrates the virtuosity of three additional composer-pianists, ranging from Schumann’s delightfully picturesque evocation of childhood to Chopin’s last lyrical essay in the ballade form that he invented, and the centerpiece of the three daunting “War Sonatas” composed during the Second World War by Prokofiev, one of the most esteemed sonata composers of the 20th century.

Schumann:     Kinderszenen (“Scenes from Childhood”), Op. 15
                      Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13
Chopin:          Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52
Prokofiev:      Sonata No. 7 in B-flat Major, Op. 83
