GIPSY KINGS
Over the years the Gipsy Kings—whose members hail from the gypsy settlements in Arles and Montpelier in southern France—have included singers and guitarists from the Reyes (Canut, Nicolas, Pablo and Patchai) and Baliardo families (Diego, Paco and Tonino). Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of flamenco singer José Reyes, who, with Manitas de Plata, sold millions of records in the 1960s and ’70s. The band’s vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals are the trademarks of an indigenous musical tradition known as “rumba flamenca.” There are no other examples of a non-English speaking band (the group’s language is the Gypsy dialect of Gitane) with such a consistent winning streak in the U.S., where the group is the biggest-selling French act ever. The Gipsy Kings made their breakthrough in 1987 with the international hit “Bamboleo,” which combines traditional rhythms with the contemporary beats of the European dance scene. A number of albums followed, including Mosaique, Allegria, Este Mundo, Gipsy Kings Live, Love and Liberté, Tierra Gitana, Cantos de Amor and Volare! The Very Best of the Gipsy Kings, and as a result the Gipsy Kings have frequently dominated the world-music charts. They have been heard on the soundtracks to such films as Peter Weir’s Fearless and the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski and on the PBS documentaries Tierra Gitana and Live at Wolf Trap. After their success at modernizing flamenco music, they left behind the synthesizers and the high-tech studios of Paris and transformed a refurbished farmhouse in France into a recording studio, where they created their 2004 Grammy-nominated acoustic album, Roots. Tonight marks the Gipsy Kings’ fourth appearance at Ravinia Festival, where they first appeared in 2005.
