Students rehearse under the guidance of jazz great Rufus Reid.
Program for Jazz
The Program for Jazz exists to promote the art of small ensemble improvisation. Although part of the program focuses on performing a well-rehearsed concert, most of the days are spent rehearsing with a variety of individuals, learning how to perform well with changing personnel. Participation in the Program for Jazz is by invitation only.
As with the classical programs, the strength of the Program for Jazz lies in its distinguished faculty. Headed by Dr. David Baker of Indiana University, the faculty includes Nathan Davis, James Moody, and Rufus Reid.
Concerts
Participants in the Steans Institute’s Progam for Jazz present one or more concerts of original compositions each summer as the culmination of their week of study and performance.
