Handel: Israel in Egypt

Program Notes

Throughout history as today, Egypt is the subject of much attention. Not only is it the setting of this year’s previously announced One Score, One Chicago selection, Aida, but Ravinia presents for the first time Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt, in conjunction with Chicago’s own Music of the Baroque Orchestra and Chorus. Last appearing at Ravinia in 1977, the ensemble returns under the leadership of Jane Glover, whom the Chicago Tribune has described as “fully inside the blazing drama” she evokes from the orchestra and chorus. Don’t miss this stunning choral masterwork as the Martin Theatre is filled with images of locust swarms—while the cicadas remain safely out of doors.
