Program Notes

This Fourth of July celebrate a wholly American program with Ravinia! Modern-day classical icon Leonard Bernstein began sketching a song cycle based on the works of 13 American poets for the Bicentennial, though the work wasn’t completed and premiered until the following year. The result was Songfest, a 12-piece work for six vocalists and orchestra, which the composer himself conducted in its entirety at Ravinia with the National Symphony Orchestra back in 1985.
