Program Notes

“In my heart, I knew it was the beginning of something new, the beginning of a new life.” That’s what piano phenomenon Lang Lang wrote in his memoir about his life-changing debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia’s 1999 Gala. Since that unforgettable evening, Lang Lang has become the biggest thing to happen to the piano since Franz Liszt. This year he returns on July 27 for another unforgettable Gala to perform not one but two concertos—a double dose of the incandescent magic that launched the career of the pianist the New York Times has dubbed the “hottest artist on the classical music planet.” This is a benefit concert hosted by the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival to support the festival and its educational activities.
